Pixel art games have always held a special place in my gaming heart. Whether it’s fighting knights in Final Fantasy Tactics or traveling the universe in Starbound there is a pixel art style for you. Extreme levels of creativity needed to make a world pop pixel by pixel is something special to see. Also, these styles of games bring on a touch of nostalgia that gamers often look for today. So far during E3 2021, there were a few titles that pixel art fans should keep an eye on.
First up we have Starmancer, developed by Chucklefish the same company that created Starbound. In Starmancer you are an A.I. managing the remnants of humanity. You have the freedom to build a new way of life for humans but your actions have consequences. Dealing with invasions from aliens, colonist going insane, and also the potential for mutiny. Starmancer looks to add a new twist to the space sim genre. This title will release on August 5th, 2021 on Steam for PC.
A pixelated cinematic platformer, developed by Sad Cat Studios Replaced inspired by Blade Runner 2049 looks to be an intense dystopian story. 40 years after a nuclear explosion Phoenix Corp runs the city but, it seems organs are the main currency. The trailer for this title showcases dynamic environments and camera angles. Along with visceral combat and an 80s futuristic aesthetic, this game looks to be an intense game. However, no official release date is available. Moreover, for Game Pass subscribers it is releasing on day one on Xbox Game Pass in 2022.
Developed and published by Pixelated Milk Sacrifire same creators who made Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs. What stood out most was the mix of pixel art and 3D modeled environments. Also, for an RPG the combat shown in the trailer was intense with the camera moving dynamically as the characters attacked. Sacrifire will have diverse combat styles, weapon crafting, dungeons, and puzzles. This story-rich pixelated JRPG has an unspecified release date in 2022 on Steam.
Little Witch In the Woods
Finally, the last title I want to spotlight is Little Witch In The Woods. Developed and published by Sunny Side Up, this title follows the story of Ellie an apprentice witch. At first glance Little Witch in the Woods made me think of Moonlighter. I did not see anything around combat but you are living the daily life of a witch. Gathering materials for potions and interacting with members of your community. The main goal of this game is for Ellie to complete her apprenticeship and become a formal witch. This relaxing-looking game does not have an official release date but looks to drop before 2022.
