This week’s gaming conversation is being driven by three very different games, but each one raises the same question: how much do expectations shape the way players react to a major release or announcement? Hideo Kojima’s PHYSINT continues to generate curiosity following the reveal of Bill Skarsgård as its star. Kojima Productions still has plenty left to reveal about the project, but adding a recognizable actor to the upcoming action-espionage game gives fans another reason to speculate about its scale, story, and how closely it could resemble the kind of espionage experience Kojima became famous for creating.
That conversation around expectations is even more interesting with Marvel’s Wolverine. Insomniac Games entered the project with enormous expectations following the success of its Spider-Man games, which means Wolverine was always going to be judged against an unusually high standard. The discussion surrounding its reviews and player reactions shows how quickly the conversation around a highly anticipated release can shift once people actually get their hands on it. Instead of simply asking whether Wolverine is good or bad, the bigger question may be whether years of anticipation created expectations that were difficult for any game to completely satisfy.
Control Resonant presents almost the opposite situation. Remedy Entertainment is taking noticeable risks by changing parts of the formula that defined the original Control, including putting Dylan Faden at the center of the experience and approaching combat differently. Those changes could ultimately determine whether Resonant feels like a meaningful evolution or simply a departure from what fans originally loved.
