Nintendo decided to surprise everyone with the announcement of a new version of the Nintendo Switch console.
We expected a Switch Pro at E3 but Nintendo revealed only the Game and Watch Zelda edition for hardware.
So what is the new Nintendo Switch?
Meet the new Nintendo Switch OLED. What we have is an updated screen and some tweaks to the original design.
The new screen is incorporating OLED tech. The Switch screen is a larger size at 7-inches. The existing model is 6.2-inches.
What are the design tweaks?
The stand is also wider for sturdier use in tabletop mode. Nintendo also says:
“Adjust the stand to find the optimal viewing angle—perfect for a quick multiplayer game with a buddy.”
This new model will also have “enhanced audio” and allows you to connect online via a wired LAN port. It also has 64 GB internal storage.
When can I buy it and how much?
The new model is set for launch this year. The release date is set for 8th October and priced at $349.99
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has previously been asked about a Switch Pro console. He responded simply:
Our company uses Nintendo Direct to inform our customers about individual products at the appropriate time,
To achieve that, we are constantly developing hardware, software, dedicated peripherals, etc., but we refrain from making comments on specific products still in development
So this could be the model he was referring to back during E3 or we could see yet another version of the Switch to launch. Hopefully, by the time we get close to launch we may hear more as another model launching after this may not sit well.
