During today’s Night City Wire episode, CD Projekt Red revealed a new anime project, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. In a collaboration with famed anime studio, Studio Trigger, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is set to take place in Night City but outside of the events of Cyberpunk 2077. For those unfamiliar with Studio Triggers pedigree in anime, they have brought us classics like Kill La Kill and Little Witch Academia, just to name a few. Their latest film, Promare, was a critical success and is one worth watching. Having watched it myself at an early viewing in 2018, it’s brilliance will dazzle you.
While there is little known about the plot for Edgerunners, Japan-Based Producer Saya Elder had this to say about the project.
“When we began this project, we were certain we did not want to make a recreation of the game. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a standalone story, set in the same universe. The stage is still Night City, but everything else is totally new. New characters, new story.”
Set to appear on Netflix in 2022, we still have some time before we get to see Cyberpunk: Edgerunners for ourselves. With the talent of both Studio Trigger and CD Projekt Red on board, this will certainly be the Cyberpunk primer they’re hoping for.
Being a fan of Studio Trigger, I am beyond excited for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. What are your thoughts on the newly announced project? Let me know on twitter @Darktagger.
