Marvel’s Avengers: One Step Forward, Two Steps Back.

I believe I speak for us all when I say that Marvel’s Avengers (Crystal Dynamics/Square Enix) has not had the smoothest of game launches nor has it had a flurry of content to keep players playing much after its launch. In roughly a 24hr peak the game can barely manage to keep an average user base on Steam over 1k players. While even though the game has found some new success with the new Black Panther Expansion pack and the new content drop, ” War for Wakanda,” and the release of the game onto Xbox Game Pass. It feels that every time a few positive things come to light is instantly overshadowed by a slew of negativity.

Today it was been shown that In-Game XP boosts options are now available to purchase. Obviously, it goes without saying that fans are not happy with this change, as back in June of 2019 the studio promised that there would be no loot boxes or pay-to-win mechanics. Now while an XP Booster may not be a pay-to-win mechanic per se, but back in March, the developers came out to say that they were going to restructure how much XP is gained in-game. So I don’t believe that these two changes come out of coincidence.

Now I get that Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have put themselves into a hole here, as when they announced that the game. Saying that it would only have cosmetic microtransactions and Battle Passes for each character and that all future characters and expansions would be free to the players alike. I can understand where they might be finding themselves running out of options with how to monetize the game going forward and looking for other avenues to generate revenue. But lowering how much XP is gained so that you can then, later on, offer XP Booster packs, is just outright not the way to do it.

Now XP Booster packs are not a new thing in the gaming world. We saw the likes of Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla that released last year has them in the game. These types of boosters are usually what we see and expect in either a Mobile game or a Free 2 Play. Not a full fledge AAA game. So my question to you is what do you think of this addition? Does this show that the game may be heading for trouble and that the “War for Wakanda” Expansion may not have been enough to save the game after all? Also, where is the Spider-Man? Do you think this is a scummy tactic for the developers to add post-launch? Should they have been more transparent with their community? Let us know what you think of these changes and how they affect you.
