Nintendo has pulled back the curtain on Kirby Air Riders with a dedicated Kirby Air Riders Direct, hosted by none other than series director Masahiro Sakurai. The presentation offered an in-depth look at the fast, chaotic, and colorful gameplay fans can expect when the title launches worldwide on November 20, 2025, exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.

Building on the foundation of Kirby Air Ride for the GameCube, Kirby Air Riders expands the formula with a roster of new playable characters, customizable Air Ride machines, fresh abilities, and modernized modes. Developed by Sora Ltd. and Bandai Namco Studios, the game promises to deliver high-speed, over-the-top Kirby action across land, sea, and air.

Sakurai explained that while Air Ride machines move forward automatically, riders control direction, drifting, and aerial maneuvers through intuitive inputs. Mastering boost charges, sharp corner drifts, and the use of unique Special attacks will be key to securing victory. Kirby himself has multiple Specials tied to his different colored variants, giving fans extra variety in gameplay.

The Direct also revealed that Kirby Air Riders introduces a larger roster of riders than ever before. Alongside Kirby, familiar allies and rivals such as Meta Knight, King Dedede, and Bandana Waddle Dee are joined by classic Kirby enemies like Cappy, Chef Kawasaki, and Starman. Each rider offers unique stats, attacks, and interactions with Air Ride machines, adding a new layer of strategy. Machines themselves differ in weight, durability, speed, and aerial capabilities, while Kirby’s trademark Copy Ability mechanic ensures that all riders can adapt by inhaling enemies to temporarily gain new powers.

One of the biggest highlights was the return of City Trial mode, now set on a sprawling floating island called Skyah. In this mode, players roam freely, battling opponents, upgrading machines, and collecting power-ups. Random events, such as quick races, combat challenges, and even surprise boss encounters with foes like Kracko and Dyna Blade, inject unpredictability into every session. Once the build-up phase ends, riders carry their upgraded machines into the Stadium phase, where varied challenges test both skill and preparation.

Other modes include Air Ride Mode, where up to six riders race to the finish line while attacking rivals to gain star-powered speed boosts, and Lessons Mode, a training area that helps players practice mechanics and strategies. Multiplayer has been expanded with support for up to eight players locally and up to sixteen players online, complete with GameChat video and voice functionality.

Fans of the loved character will not have to wait long to experience the action for themselves. Attendees at PAX West 2025 in Seattle (August 29 – September 1) will be able to play a hands-on demo of Kirby Air Riders at Nintendo’s booth.

With new riders, machines, and the return of fan-favorite City Trial mode, the Kirby Air Riders Direct showcased a title that balances nostalgic roots with bold new ideas. All signs point to November 20 being a major celebration for fans of both Kirby and high-speed multiplayer mayhem.
