IO Interactive Announce Project Fantasy

IO Interactive

IO Interactive is a well-known studio best known for the popular Hitman game franchise starring Agent 47. The series’ success has even resulted in film adaptations. In addition, the studio is collaborating with MGM, EON Productions, and Delhi on a new project called Project 007, which is an origins story for James Bond. Another release is also in the works, as Windows Central reported in 2021. The studio will work with Xbox to create Project Dragon, a fantasy title for which they have job openings. The new project, according to the article, is an online connected-world RPG set in a completely new universe, as confirmed by the developer’s recent blog post that shared concept art. It is a significant departure from the studio’s previous work, shifting from hitmen and secret agents to a fantasy world, possibly featuring dragons, as the project’s name suggests.

What We Know Of The New IO Interactive Project

According to the blog post, the studio is embarking on an exciting new adventure that promises to expand their creativity, capabilities, and identity. They are in the process of building a new world and a new intellectual property, specifically an online fantasy role-playing game that will entertain players for years to come. This project, currently known as Project Fantasy, feels familiar yet represents a journey unlike any other that the studio has been on.

For many team members, the project is deeply personal, and it appears to have begun long before they even became game developers in the fantasy genre. The studio is eager to explain more about their new project and invite others to join them on this exciting journey.

From the “Fighting Fantasy” books compelling you to choose your path, alone, against wizards, lizards, and thief kings. To the togetherness, camaraderie, agony, and delight found around the tabletop. For some it meant taking the role of a game master: Part storyteller, part AI opponent, part guide, part villain. For everyone around that table it meant creativity, imagination, building a world together, and a shared goal in creating a great game experience.

This idea – that a diverse group of individuals with different skills and strengths can work together and become more than the sum of their parts – is what inspires us. It inspires the fantasy world we are building – and it inspires how we build it. IOI now spans multiple distinct studios, from Copenhagen and Malmö in the north to warm Barcelona in the south. All studios take part in making all our games, including this new endeavor. People from all over the world with diverse personalities and skillsets are coming together to forge a new beginning.

This is just the start of our journey into this new world we are making. We hope you sense the warmth, the danger, the togetherness, and the heart we put into it… And if you do, we would be honored if you join us.

IO Interactive

In the beginning, I noticed a reference to Fighting Fantasy books. As a child, I spent many hours immersed in these books authored by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone. So this project holds a special appeal for me. The early stories played a significant role in shaping my interests today. And I can relate to the personal journey of the author. Going through those books was a big part of my childhood, so I’m hoping to learn more about this project. I’m curious to research what it entails to write it, and it’s now high on my radar.
