About six months ago we got the official reveal after leaks for the now current annual Call of Duty release. This followed the previous year’s installment of the franchise which was Treyarch and Raven Software’s Black Ops Cold War. Vanguard was then in turn developed by Sledgehammer and now it seems we are seeing reports of the next title in the franchise. So it seems that for 2022, Call of Duty is in the hands of Infinity Ward.
This came about after Infinity Ward took to Twitter saying simply “A new generation of Call of Duty is coming soon. Stay frosty”. So this is normal, as development on Call of Duty is normally headed by one of three teams. This means the others assisting and we have confirmed Infinity Ward is developing this year’s installment. As well as the studio, it was announced in the latest financial report.
Development on this year’s premium and Warzone experiences is being led by Activision’s renowned Infinity Ward studio. The team is working on the most ambitious plan in franchise history, with industry-leading innovation and a broadly appealing franchise setting.”Activision on Call of Duty 2022
So what we can expect?
We have heard rumors it’s a sequel to their 2019 release which was the reboot for Modern Warfare. Rumors also circulated a more tactical approach. If true it may interest fans of games like Insurgency Sandstorm and Rainbow Six Siege.
This could also be the last Call of Duty under the current regime at Activision due to Microsoft looking to close out the acquisition of the developer by early 2023. What do you think about this news? We know from the same financial report Vanguard wasn’t as successful as Black Ops Cold War. However would a return to the Modern Warfare series interest you?
