Numskull Games, alongside indie developer Smitner Studio, has announced that Hazard Pay is set to launch on all platforms in June 2026. It’s a dystopian pixel-art block-pushing puzzle game set in 1982. It features a blend of stealth, survival horror, and narrative choice. There’s a playable demo out now on Steam.
The Mission Sounded Easy Enough
Hazard Pay has you cleaning up after a catastrophic containment breach. The introductory cutscene emphasizes that you’re there to clean up AND NOTHING ELSE. In the full game, you’ll probably have to decide on whether or not to rescue any survivors or just look the other way and whistle as they escape.
The first couple of levels in the demo are pretty straightforward. You push your janitor bucket along to clean up bloodstains. The areas are pretty confined, and the twist of the game is that if you step over any evidence, you’ll start tracking blood everywhere. You can’t leave the area until all evidence is disposed of.
Pretty soon, the game starts throwing a few more wrenches into your plans to collect your check and get out of dodge. There are acidic barrels that you’ll have to drop evidence into. You’ll also have to make sure you close the lid on said barrels. I’d forget, my character would fall into the barrel, and I’d be treated to a hilarious game-over screen. Fortunately, the demo is very forgiving, allowing you to rewind your moves or reset the map.
