Way back in 1990, Ron Gilbert introduced the world to the character Guybrush Threepwood in the legendary The Secret of Monkey Island. And although point-and-click adventures are not everyone’s things, this one was a big hit amongst those who gave it a chance.

He also brought Guybrush Threepwood back for the sequel a year later Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. That was the last he worked on the franchise but other games in the series existed. 1997 was the year we saw The Curse of Monkey Island and Escape from Monkey Island in 2000. We also saw a Telltale release Tales of Monkey Island in 2009. But what of Ron Gilbert? Would he return to his iconic franchise? His last game was Thimbleweed Park in 2017 after all and had left Monkey Island behind roughly thirty years ago.

Would We Ever Return To Monkey Island

Back in 2013, he made a blog post called titled If I Made Another Monkey Island. And later that year he said on Twitter that if he was going to ever return to the franchise, he’d announce it on 1st April.

And on this April Fool’s day, Ron Gilbert posted on his blog about the franchise.

For 18 years the Grumpy Gamer blog has been April Fools’ day free because it’s a stupid tradition.

So to mix things up a little I’m taking this opportunity to announce I’ve decided to make another Monkey Island.

Returning to Monkey Island

Many will have forgotten what he’d said nine years earlier or not even been aware of it. So naturally, it was assumed to be a joke. However, it seems that it was far from a joke.

The Return Of Guybrush

Yes, he is back and it’s a direct sequel to Monkey Island 2. We have a short trailer which states that the new game called Return to Monkey Island is the “long-awaited follow-up to the legendary Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge”. Dominic Armato is also back to voice Guybrush once more.

As for release details, we know from the trailer and website that it’s coming this year. But for platforms, we have no indication of what it’s launching on though there’s a chance all consoles and PC. That’s just a guess until release details are confirmed.
