You may remember the sad end of the Sony first-party studio known as Japan Studio. They collaborated on some popular titles, including Bluepoint’s 2018 remake of Shadow of the Colossus, Gravity Rush, and Knack. Their most recent project before the closure was on Bluepoint’s remaster of Shadow of the Colossus from 2011. Originally a PlayStation 2 game by Fumito Ueda, director of Team Ico. Then in 2007, he started his new game, The Last Guardian. Ueda left Sony a few years later, but was still contracted to finish The Last Guardian. His new studio was genDESIGN, who then finished up The Last Guardian, which was released in 2016.
In 2018, Fumito Ueda announced a new game was coming, albeit at the prototype stage, and in March 2020, Epic Games was involved with the funding. Rumors circulated that the new genDESIGN game would debut at the Tokyo Game Show in 2022. This was helped by a teaser in the studio’s New Year’s postcard from 2021. The card said 2021, but each number had an image from one of the studio’s games. We see Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian, and an untitled game. This was reported at the time by GameRant. The card design can be seen below and in a Tweet from a few months ago.
Where to Next For genDESIGN?
It appears Ueda wants to announce what his next project is very soon. Five years ago they announced they had a game at the prototype stage, so could this be that game? Gematsu translated the recent issue of Famitsu, which contains various developers’ ambitions for 2023. Ueda states that “All of genDesign is working hard to be able to finally announce something, so please give us your support.” Could we be heading for an announcement from genDESIGN at some point in 2023? Even a Happy New Year tweet supports this view.
If you are unable to see the translation it reads as follows
Happy new year. It’s finally a year where we can deliver a lot of topics to everyone! We are doing our best, so please look forward to it. Thank you for your continued support in the year. At genDESIGN, we are looking for colleagues regardless of career or new graduates for the project currently under development.
Hopefully, we get some more information sooner rather than later. Were you a fan of Ueda’s previous games? As always we’d love to hear from you.
