Imagine an adventure inspired by Redwall novels with the emotion-heavy worldbuilding of Watership Down fused into a tactical RPG centered around frogs, and you have Amphibian. Developed and published by JARCORP Interactive, Amphibian is the debut title from the Massachusetts-based studio. Like the name implies, this upcoming RPG is centered around frogs and how they are trying to save their world, or Pond. The world premiere trailer was unveiled today during the Future Games Show, and if you missed it, you can watch it below.

Somber, Frog-Based, Super2D RPG

If you enjoyed classic games such as Golden Sun, Fire Emblem, and even Resident Evil, you will be excited to know that JARCORP has taken inspiration from these titles. Amphibian was developed with detail-oriented players in mind, especially those who enjoy when mistakes in-game have actual consequences. There will be light 2D platforming, exploration, and classic survival horror game-inspired puzzles. Visually, the game will look like modern 2D RPGs such as Octopath Traveler.

“I’ve wanted to make games my whole life; choosing a degree in software engineering was
my way of grinding the XP to get here. Every line of code and every frame of Amphibian
runs through my hands, and my favorite part has been filling the world with reasons to
explore: hidden secrets and systems that forge your heroes into a battle-hardened squad
ready for the war ahead.” – James Roumeliotis, Developer/Technical Director

A point to highlight is that this game has no filler according to the developers. Amphibian aims to be a 10-15 hour RPG experience, which is tight and fast-paced. Side quests will be purposeful and blend into the overall plot progression. “There is no grinding, no economy, and every encounter is deliberately placed, forcing players to continuously manage dwindling resources. Maintaining party health and managing items is critical, as a single blow can render grievous injuries with persistent debuffs. Hunting secrets and thorough exploration becomes ever more important, since every stat and hitpoint matters.”

As an RPG fan, Amphibian immediately caught my eye, and after having a chance to speak with the game’s creative director, Greg Alexandropoulos. It is easy to see how much love and passion is going into developing this title. A Pond facing a drought while its society is being torn apart by a war between weapon-wielding and spell-slinging Toads and Frogs; sounds like a dope story. There is no official release date at this time, but we can expect to play Amphibian on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac, and Linux.
