As the title states, this is a well-known franchise that is currently celebrating a quarter of a century. That was when the world was introduced to the post-apocalypse and the series is strong today.

We have over those twenty-five years seen four main games as well as a couple of spin-off games since the Bethesda acquisition of the franchise. There are some non-canon titles before that as well. We are also getting on Amazon Prime a TV series which recently we got our first official look at here. The series launched officially in 1997 but Interplay had the idea well before that. The idea took shape in 1988 with Wasteland by Interplay and published by EA. Creator Brian Fargo tried to obtain the license from EA for Wasteland but as we have seen since was unsuccessful. Hence a new IP for his love of the post-apocalypse was needed, and Fallout was born.

I had been a post-apocalyptic fiction fan since I was a kid. And Wasteland was my first attempt at bringing something to the genre. Shortly after finishing the Wasteland game, Interplay became a publisher and we no longer created games for other people. I tried to get EA to license me the rights back, but I was unable to succeed despite trying for many years. I finally decided we’d do our own post-apocalyptic game and call it Fallout.

So, let’s look at the main titles we have become most familiar with over the years. With that in mind, let’s start with the beginning of the series as we know. If you decided to jump into these after playing the more recent titles, you’ll find a major change. Pre Bethesda, the series was not action-based or first-person. It was isometric and turn-based. The series in 1997 was a very different experience than today.

Fallout 2

The second game launched the following year. This allowed us to set stats for NPC party members and a visually upgraded game thanks to the engine upgrade. It still resembles what we saw with its predecessor and the Wasteland games. It would be a full decade before the series would return. In that period the franchise became part of the Bethesda family.

Fallout 3

The 2008 release completely changed the way the series was to play. It became an action-based RPG with a first-person view. It is a loved entry to the franchise and won numerous awards and led the series into the hands of more players.

Fallout: New Vegas

Two years later we saw a new title in the series, but it was a spin-off from the main franchise. Not only that Bethesda gave reigns to Obsidian Entertainment to develop this. This studio contained several members of the team responsible for the original game. This move was partially due to the fact that Bethesda was busy working on a new entry to another loved franchise. In this case, it was the development of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim which launched the following year.

Fallout 4

The next game in the series launched November 2015 and by this time we were on a new console generation. The series also on console added mod support and it isn’t done yet. We have confirmation it will be upgraded for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. All we know it’s due next year.

Fallout 76

The more recent entry launched in 2018 and is probably the best the series has looked to date. It is the earliest time period in the series if you discount the intro to the fourth game. It is also the first game to include multiplayer. When launched it received criticism, which Bethesda has spent time trying to address.

The Future Of The Franchise

We know Amazon is bringing the post-apocalypse to the small screen with a live-action TV series. In the meantime, fans wonder about a fifth game. Well, we have confirmed it is coming with that news coming from Todd Howard. However, it could be some time as they are working on The Elder Scrolls VI first. That’s not all, there’s an ambitious mod for the fourth game set in London. As we see from the trailer below, it’s a promising-looking piece of work.

So, what about you? Are you a fan of the franchise? What are your favorite moments in this post-apocalyptic saga? As always, we’d love to hear from you.
