Another studio purchase announcement and once again Embracer Group are involved after previously purchasing Gearbox which took place about a year ago. Consequently, Gearbox has just recently purchased Lost Boys just prior to their appearance at PAX East when they announced the new Tales From the Borderlands game. So, now Embracer has added not just one but several new studios to their family.

Now Embracer Group is about to close its latest acquisition and it’s the purchase of several developers and IPs from Square Enix. The cost of these purchases comes to around $300 million. It’s also a relatively small price when you factor in Microsoft’s purchase of Bethesda for $7.5 billion. The full details have been put in press releases by both Square Enix and Embracer Group.

What The Acquisition Includes For Embracer Group

This purchase includes the studios Eidos-Montréal, Square Enix Montréal and Crystal Dynamics. So, let’s look at the IPs and there we see some huge names. Names such as Tomb Raider, Legacy of Kain, and Deus Ex. We also know from Embracer’s press release this includes “more than 50 back-catalogue games”. The deal is expected to be completed “during the second quarter of Embracer’s financial year 22/23 (July-September 2022)”.

As for what Square Enix we see from the press release it seems they want to improve on what they have.

Going forward, the Company’s development function will comprise its studios in Japan, Square Enix External Studios, and Square Enix Collective.

The Company’s overseas studios will continue to publish franchises such as JUST CAUSE, OUTRIDERS, and Life is Strange.
