BTS’ Comeback Butter Release of the single and video premiered on YouTube on May 21.
The boys are back! But honestly, did they ever go away? NOPE! Here’s my review.

My Bangtan Boys are back and in full effect! Guys, guys. Guys. I learned the song in two views, I’m not kidding LOL. I love this band so much, it’s becoming a real problem. But hey, if I’m wrong, I don’t want to be right.
If you’ve been living under a rock all of 2020 (honestly, haven’t we all??) then you may not have heard of the South Korean band taking over the world Bangtan Sonyeondan (Bulletproof Boyscouts). Their first full-English release, “Dynamite” took the world by storm in the fall of 2020. It was a great upbeat pop song we all needed to get out of our 2020 funk. And now they’re hyping us up for the summer of 2021 (VACCINES AM I RIGHT??!!). “Butter” is another full-English release, which is such a treat for the non-Korean ARMYs (the nickname for their fan base).
First, let’s discuss the song. The song. Oh, the song. Written by BTS member RM, Jenna Andrews and Rob Grimaldi (“Dynamite), Stephen Kirk, Alex Bilowitz, Sebastian Garcia, and Ron Perry. The first thing I thought of when I heard it was the Jonas Brothers. If you were, or still are, a Jonas Brothers fan, you will LOVE this song. It’s also a beautiful homage to “Faith” by George Michael (RIP). It’s a hip, picked bass line which crescendos into an expansive melodic pop track that makes you want to dance.
The mix of live instrumentation and 80’s style electronics brings that finger-snapping, feet-tapping groove we all love so much. Imagine being in Target, the song’s on the intercom, and you unknowingly start pushing your cart to the rhythm of the song while you bop your head, and add a little dance to your step. It’s one of those songs. And it’s perfect for the grand re-opening of summer pools.
The lyrics are talking about how amazingly handsome and captivating they are. Because it is true. “I don’t need no Usher to remind me you got it bad.” Who comes up with this stuff??!!
BTS has been stealing hearts since they debuted. They have a reality show in Korea called “Run! BTS” (you can watch all episodes with English subtitles at this link). On the show, they are made to do a number of physical challenges and compete in teams for prizes, such as what to pick for dinner. It’s a friendly competition between the guys and some serious amusement for the fans. One of the episodes was half the group pretending to be cops, and the others are criminals in black and white suits, and they have to be interviewed in a police station. What are their crimes? Arson, murder, and theft. For stealing, setting fire to, and stopping the hearts of ARMYs with their charms and dance moves. I’ll come back to this later when I discuss the music video.
BTS is naturally an endearing group of guys, and you cannot help but to fall in love with them. They are a pop boy band, that’s true, but mostly, who they are as people and how they relate to each other is why ARMYs love them so much. So they just suck you in and “Butter” is them being so smooth you don’t even know what happened to you. It’s a well-known fact that once you become an ARMY, your life is pretty much over. Because everything, every minute of the day, is spent devoted to these guys and their music. They even make reference to “Smooth Criminal” in the first verse.
Now the music video. Wow oh wow. “Dynamite” is what got me to become an ARMY in the first place, and that video is so great. But “Butter” is what you call the boys to become men. First, they’re happy and dancing along and now they’re in your face, seducing you, and not apologetic at all. As a reference back to the 80’s inspired track, the video starts in black and white, with a white background, with 80’s fashion. Yet somehow they still make that look cool, I don’t know-how.
Once the chorus hits, with that bold pop beat, the screen is flooded with color and we see all this beautiful hair color that has literally been making Twitter trends for the past 2 months. Jungkook is purple mixed with blue, Jimin went full out and just did an all rainbow style, and j-hope shows us blondes have more fun. The dance moves are in sync and graceful like Michael Jackson with Fred Astaire flair (don’t worry, I will be learning choreo VERY soon).
The video becomes consistently brighter now that the pop groove is in full swing, with bright oranges, yellows (for butter, of course), reds, blues, etc. The only shot that still keeps the black and white, in the beginning, is the mugshot lineup set. As I stated before, they are smooth criminals and are not apologetic, so they just stand there, with mugshot signs (with their real birthdates), staring down the camera, knowing full well some of these young girls are about to faint. They really are so freaking pretty, I can’t stand it, no one can.
They have a tennis set where they dance to the chorus which is also a nod to “Run! BTS” because they had to do a tennis challenge, and member j-hope was a tennis star before he became part of the group. I love that they’re introducing new U.S. fans to their culture. We also get a 90’s flashback with a quick elevator dance sequence. Each member getting his own spotlight to have a dance break. What caught me about this clip, in particular, is Jungkook. Jungkook (aka JK) is the youngest member, and frankly, one of the most talented kids anyone has ever seen. He can sing and dance and has so many off-stage talents, I can’t remember them all.
He was recruited as a young teenager by different Korean labels before he chose to join BTS. So he was very much in the making of becoming a solo star, and I do not doubt he would have had the success of Justin Bieber. He still can. So in this elevator scene, his hair is tied back in a ponytail, and he does a Michael Jackson spin, and I swear, it was like watching Michael from the early ’90s. It gave me chills. Watch this kid, I’m telling you, he’s going to be slamming records just like the group has.
The highlight, and I mean THE HIGHLIGHT of the BTS’ Comeback Butter Release video is watching the guys create the word “ARMY” with their bodies. Do you see what I mean?? As hard as the fans go for them, they go hard for us and love us with every fiber of their being. Honestly, that solidified getting a tattoo dedicated to them. I’m old enough to be their mother, and I will still do it, I am NOT ashamed.
The video ends, of course, with one final dance sequence on a stage that looks like ConnectFour, a rap outro with my bias, j-hope, and then j-hope is eating butter. Apparently, their dedication is on another level because it took him about an hour to shoot that 5-second clip, and ate butter the whole time (gross).
Check out BTS, do yourself a favor, and get your summer playlist ready, and put “Butter” and “Dynamite” at the top of the list.
