The Book of Boba Fett began streaming on Disney plus December 29th and will run weekly into February. The Book of Boba Fett follows the notorious bounty hunter after his return to the franchise in The Mandalorian.

The first episode starts off with Boba submerged in a Bacta Pod, a healing chamber filled with regenerative agents. Boba is having dreams/flashbacks of his time after emerging from the Sarlacc Pit. In Return of the Jedi, he falls in and was presumed dead for decades. We see how he escapes, being stripped of his Beskar Armor, and being taken prisoner. Being the legendary Bounty Hunter he is, he immediately plans to escape. He manages to escape into the desert and is recaptured after a standoff with one of the Raiders.

Wake Up, Boss

Boba is wakened up by Fennec Shand. He must go downstairs and accept the tributes of many former vassals of Jabba and influential figures across Tatooine. The mayor of Mos Espa sends an emissary empty-handed and demands a tribute of Boba. After the tributes are collected, two Gamorreans are brought in as captives. They refused to surrender in the immediate aftermath of Boba’s takeover and their fate must be decided. Boba shows us for the first time his style of ruling by enlisting the guards in return for sparing their lives.

Next, we follow Boba, Fennec, and their new muscle going around visiting former “clients” of Jabba. A Cantina Owner gives Boba a helmet full of coins. As the group departs, the two gamorrean guards become separated from Boba and Fennec as they are much slower in nature. Upon turning a corner, a group of thugs armed with stun batons and energy shields ambushes the Crime Lord. In the ensuing battle many thugs fall and the rest attempt to flee. Boba fires a wrist rocket at one and Fennec chases two others. Whilst Fennec tries to bring them in, Boba is carried off to his Palace and is placed back in the Bacta pod.

We Could Have Both Escaped, You Know

Here we see more of Boba’s time as a prisoner of the Tusken Raiders. One of the raider kids brings him out into the desert with a Rodian. They scout a homestead being ransacked by a group of bandits and after this, they are required to dig for water pods. The Rodian finds multiple pods and unfortunately, he unearths a large creature. The creature quickly kills the Rodian and has a brief altercation with the kid’s pet. The only one left to fight is Boba, who chokes out the creature with a chain much like how Princess Leia chokes out Jabba. After this, they return to the Tusken camp with the kid carrying home the creature’s head as a trophy.

The camp celebrates the kid’s kill whilst the chief recognizes Boba was clearly the one who brought him down. He takes a water pod offered by the Chief and the flashback ends. We follow Fennec pursuing the remaining two thugs from the attack. After some parkour and a bit of hand-to-hand combat, Fennec secures a stun baton and sends one of the thugs off the roof. The remaining thug surrenders.

What Do I Think?

This episode was a strong introduction to the show and the experience the crew gained producing the Mandalorian is on full display. The pacing of the episode is much better and no scene overstays its welcome. Watching Boba escape the Sarlacc Pit was something fans are sure to love.
