We all know Battlefield 2042’s is on its way. EA revealed the game last month but due to a multiplayer focus, it has no campaign and also no battle royale. It has for current-gen hardware All-Out Warfare with 128 players, last generation it’s half that. We are yet to see more about the team-based Hazard Zone which is due later on. But for now, we see the new mode by the newly rebranded Ripple Effect in Battlefield Portal
What is Portal?
This mode starts off bringing back maps players have loved from older versions of the game alongside the 7 announced maps. But that’s just for starters. So let’s list the returning favorites.
- Arica Harbor (from Bad Company 2)
- Valparaiso (from Bad Company 2)
- Battle of the Bulge (from Battlefield 1942)
- El Alamein (from Battlefield 1942)
- Caspian Border (from Battlefield 3)
- Noshahr Canals (from Battlefield 3)
All maps are updated for today’s consoles and supporting up to 128 player matches. But that’s not all.
What else is this mode?
With the maps in Portal, you can do whatever you like as you can set matches up to how you like with your own rules. Basically what Battlefield Portal is for us are an editor and builder. So we can make our own modes and matches however we like.
You can have the US army from 1942 fight on Noshahr Canals to fight soldiers from the 2042 region. Or maybe have the warring armies in Bad Company 2 take arms in one of the new maps with tornados. You can do this and so much more. Though as we saw on EA Play Live it has every combination you can think of. From Battlefield 3 era soldiers fighting those from 1942 to a small squad from 2042 taking on a superior force in number from Bad Company 2, it’s all there. Mix and match vehicles from different eras. Portal has it all covered. Just no penguins with flamethrowers. Though we can have knives vs defibrillators.
So it’s a very in depth editor have they created modes to try first?
Yes, they have. The options at play are simply overwhelming due to the various combination and depth it goes into. Watch the EA Play Live presentation here from around 1hr 18 mins to see the mode demonstrated as it’s best watched to see the amount of flexibility. But we have preset experiences created by the community.
What is the new logic editor?
This is how we build from scratch new game modes then selves. Or tinker with existing modes. Such as kills give you health. And this is only the tip of the iceberg. Ripple Effect’s General Manager Christian Grass said tools like the logic editor would only previously be used by the development team. He also said they “want Battlefield 2042 to be the ultimate experience”
So hopefully the game will have a long future especially with the portal being added. It gives scope for more maps from the past to return. From Kharg Island and Operation Metro from Battlefield 3 to Battle of Midway and Omaha Beach from 1942. Maybe a look at the official website will offer more information as well.
