Today might be April fool’s day, but that did not stop Rue Valley from releasing Awkward Valley. Awkward Valley is a collaboration with renowned comic book artist, The Awkward Yeti. Awkward Valley is a time management or daily planner game. Also maybe sprinkle a tad of Groundhog Day in there as well. You set tasks to do to plan your day and watch how the day unfolds using a deck building mechanic. Rue Valley heralds Awkward Valley as a productivity simulator. And, it’s currently live on Steam right now. And, it’s free! The best April Fool’s joke ever!

Awkward Valley is somewhat of a marketing tool for Rue Valley. Rue Valley is a narrative game where you go on a journey of self discovery with the main character. The character is stuck in a time loop and the player must wrestle the complexities of relationships, their past, and memories. Every character is battling their own demons. As the player progresses, you can unlock “mindsets” and “intentions.” These are essentially random perks your character picks up along their journey. An example used is the player can become more outgoing when drunk or shy when nervous. Embracing the chaos is the name of the game and players will be rewarded with a myriad of hilarious dialogue options. This mechanic is fairly similar to a mechanic in Disco Elysium where the player can embrace perks that come with odd perks which causes the game and dialogue to consistently be strange and weirdly funny. It looks like Awkward Valley is aiming to hit that similar vein with it’s mindset and intentions feature. Memories in Rue Valley are stored along a graph so the player can follow the mindsets and intentions that the main character develops during the game.

Key features of Rue Valley:

  • Personality system: Craft your own personality in Rue Valley. You can be a cold-hearted loner who overthinks everything or a melodramatic loudmouth who always trusts their gut instinct.

  • Store Your Memories: Important memories are stored in a graph, unlocking unique interactions around the Rue Valley Motel and new mindsets to help build out the main character.

  • Uncover the Secrets of Rue Valley: An anomaly has trapped the area around the Rue Valley Motel in a time loop. Experiment with the main character’s actions each day until you have enough evidence to solve the mystery.

  • 2D Parallax Art Style: Rue Valley has an instantly recognizable, visually appealing comic book aesthetic inspired by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
