All the way back in 2007, Ubisoft released a brand new IP for gamers worldwide. That game was Assassin’s Creed and launched the debut of Altair, an assassin in the late 12th century. Their website tells us that the Holy Land is being torn apart by the Third Crusade. As Altair, you are setting out to “stop the hostilities by suppressing both sides of the conflict.” The latest installment is expected to launch later this year. Where the previous three games in the series went a more RPG route, with big open worlds, and games I personally loved, the new title will go back to its roots. That game is Assassin’s Creed Mirage and will tie into the most current title Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla.
Let’s focus on the original game for now, though. Assassin’s Creed, as we know launched late in 2007 so the game has recently celebrated its 15th anniversary. Its influence has spread to all reaches of media and it made it to the big screen with a major film starring Michael Fassbender. It will also get a live-action TV series sometime in the near future. The original release has stood the test of time. Does the gameplay hold up as good today as it did all those years ago? Let’s find out by revisiting this pillar of one of gaming’s most iconic franchises.
Assassin’s Creed 15 Years Later
For the purposes of this article, all footage was captured on Xbox Series X running the game via backwards compatibility with the Xbox One X enhancements turned on. Visually we can see for the most part it still looks really good being 15 years old with only some minor roughness around the edges. Bearing in mind this is basically the Xbox 360 version it still holds its own today though it naturally can’t match the likes of Valhalla for visual quality.
Gameplay is very much playable but as expected nowhere near as fluid as the more recent installments in the series that have had time to refine and hone better movement techniques. Story-wise naturally nothing has changed over the years. Consequently looking back at reviews some were positive of the story, some less so I personally found it to be a decent story. If you are on PC you want to pick it up you could do a trial of Ubisoft +. For Xbox we have no confirmation is this will be part of the subscription service on the console. Sadly though the only Sony console this is available for is the PlayStation 3. It is very much worth a look if the opportunity arises and as a fan of the series, it is a must-play.
