What is ALIEN The Roleplaying Game: Evolved Edition?

Alien The Roleplaying Game: Evolved Edition is an updated and streamlined version of the ALIEN RPG. ALIEN RPG is based on the popular ALIEN franchise. 20th Century Studios officially licensed this product, which is incredible since I grew up playing the games, reading the comics, and watching the movies, but never got the chance to experience either version of this TTRPG.

Key Features

  • A bold new look and feel to the Core Rulebook, with all new page layouts by Johan Nohr (of MÖRK BORG fame), new interior maps and artwork, and a stunning new core book cover by renowned artist Colm Geoghegan (Creepy Duck Design)
  • Life path character generation
  • Revised and expanded core rules for talents, stress and panic, and stealth
  • Reworked combat rules for armor, ammo, grenades, stuns, and spaceships
  • New iconic weapons, items, ships, and locations from the hit film Alien: Romulus
  • Various new rules and tools in high demand from players, including zero gravity, miniatures play support, and expanded campaign play

This TTRPG is set in the year 2183 and takes place just over 3 years after the destruction of the Hadley’s Hope colony on LV-426. In other words, it takes place just after the events of ALIENS and ALIEN 3.

The game can be played in two distinct game modes

  • Cinematic Play: These pre-built scenarios transport players into an immersive ALIEN film experience. They’re one-shot campaigns, aka they’re designed to be played in a single session. This game mode emphasizes high-risk and high-reward scenarios. There’s a strong chance that not all players will make it to the end of the session. Maybe you’ll get to go out in a blaze of glory like Vasquez.
  • Campaign Play: This is designed to be like your traditional TTRPG campaign. You create player characters that will be used for multiple game sessions. This allows you to craft a story and explore the ALIEN universe like a sandbox mode in a video game.

It’s a Good Day to be an ALIEN fan

In addition to Alien The Roleplaying Game: Evolved Edition, there is also a Starter Set available for pre-order. This includes abridged rules, pre-made character sheets, custom dice, and so many other cool things that will allow people to jump into an adventure immediately. Also included in the Starter Set is an expanded edition of Hope’s Last Day. This seems like a cool game night in a box.

The Rapture Protocol is also a complete cinematic adventure. It’s a stand-alone adventure, but it also serves as the first installment of the Jeremiah Saga trilogy. I assume that you can run this as a campaign. It’s designed for 3-5 players plus the Game Mother (as a side note, I absolutely love that this is the preferred nomenclature for this game’s respective Dungeon Master, Story Teller, etc.) It returns to the roots of the ALIEN franchise. You play as a small crew on a star freighter set to resupply on a remote industrial colony. Naturally, since this is in the ALIEN franchise, what sounds like a simple mission will go sideways and turn into a desperate struggle for survival against the xenomorphs.

Last but not least, there is also a new Miniatures set that features 20 high-quality miniatures of soldiers, Xenomorphs, and much more. These can be used alongside any of the items mentioned above with the game maps to help add an extra layer of immersion to your game sessions. There’s also a rule book to allow players to do quick skirmish battles. Seeing the iconic Power Loader and Xenomorph Drones available is pretty sweet. There is no assembly required to boot.
