Over the last couple of years, the gaming industry has been filled with surprises. Whether it be Baldur’s Gate 3 reminding gamers of what an RPG could be, or Astro Bot reminding Sony of what they could be. But heading into 2025, I think I speak for everyone when I say that a video game based on a very old Anime being announced would surely be the biggest surprise of the year. That game would be Samurai Pizza Cats: A Blast from the Past. As the debut title from developer Blast Zero, the game looks very nostalgic, in all the right ways. But what is Samurai Pizza Cats, and why should you be excited for its game?
What You Need to Know About Samurai Pizza Cats: A Blast from the Past
Samurai Pizza Cats is an old anime from the 90s. It was aimed at a younger audience but the english dub version had a lot of time period relevant pop culture references. The show aired from 1990 to 1991, and of course, after 35 years the announcement of the game was a nostalgic surprise. Not just because of the fact the IP has remained dormant. But because of the exciting presentation of the trailer. The opening animation looked time period adequate, like something from the show originally. The voice cast are also returning, and their performances are similar, even after all this time.
The game will feature the original Samurai Pizza Cats fighting against The Big Cheese. You will be able to play as Speedy, Guido and Polly who will all have their own unique abilities for combat and puzzles. The game will be a side scrolling action RPG with plenty of platforming. You will be able to swap from either of the Cats freely to match the situation you are in.

You will also level up through the game and can acquire upgrades in the form of cards to use. Obviously, in the trailer we did not get too much of a glimpse at this system. However, it seems to be keeping varied, yet simple with a stylish look in its menus. The game has that retro cartoon like style with a nostalgic grainy look to it all. It just looks like Samurai Pizza Cats, but in game form.

The game does not have a release date currently. But if you would like to stay up to date on it, you can follow the developers official X account here. As well as find the Steam page here, and the Epic Games Store page here if you want to wish list it. It is currently unknown what consoles it will launch on at this time as well.
