As the new year approaches, many people are setting resolutions and goals for themselves. If you’re someone who enjoys video games, you might be wondering if dedicating more time to gaming is a worthwhile resolution. If you are a truly dedicated gamer you probably promised yourself every year that you are going to actually start some of those games you purchased the previous year. With that grueling fact aside, we’ll explore 5 reasons why you should start playing video games in 2023. Additionally, if you are already a gamer, we will discuss the potential benefits of playing more video games.
Before we start let’s get to a quick point. Whether you play on Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PC, or even Mobile Gaming, video games can be a fun and enjoyable way to pass the time. There is a thrill and sense of accomplishment that comes from completing a challenging level or defeating a skilled opponent, whether you’re playing a solo campaign or competing with friends online. Your mood might be improved by this sense of success, which can also give you a much-needed break from the pressures of daily life.

But the benefits of video games don’t stop at pure entertainment. So for our first reason, let’s turn to what I feel is an important one that hits home for me. Studies have shown that video games can have a positive impact on cognitive skills and mental health. For example, action games have been found to improve spatial awareness, attention, and decision-making skills. Strategy games can help with problem-solving and critical thinking, while puzzle games can boost memory and perception. In addition to these cognitive benefits, video games can also be a powerful tool for stress relief and relaxation. Many people find that gaming provides an escape from the pressures of the real world and allows them to unwind after a long day. Some research has even suggested that video games can be used as a form of therapy to treat conditions such as depression and anxiety.
Secondly, playing video games can also be a social activity, whether you’re playing with friends in person or connecting with others online. The sense of community and connection that comes from playing games with others can be an important source of support and can even help improve relationships.
But perhaps the most compelling and third reason to play more video games in the new year is the sheer variety of games available. With the proliferation of gaming platforms and the growth of the industry, there are now games to suit every interest and skill level. Whether you’re a fan of fast-paced action games, slow-burn strategy games, or immersive role-playing games, there’s something out there for you regardless of the platform you chose to play on.
Upcoming 2023 Games

Completing putting all the health reasons aside, the fourth reason is one I know gamers will appreciate. Video games in 2023 is shaping up to be one of the best years we have had as far as releases in a very long time. From Spider-Man 2 to the highly anticipated Starfield, we are going to be blessed with new worlds. Barring getting hit with delays, which are not a bad thing, this new year would be a fantastic time for new gamers to discover why we love this hobby so much.
The fifth and final reason is a selfish one. I guarantee I’m not alone in this however it can be seen as not a major deal. According to a report from Axios, video game revenue dropped in 2022 for the first time in a long time. In the report, it stated the industry brought in $184.4 billion which is down $192.7 billion. This could be for a lot of reasons, however, it’s something that causes people like me to worry about the future. We have already seen the price of AAA games go up from $60 to $70 in addition to consoles like the Ps5 increasing their price in some regions. More people playing video games leads to the industry continuing to move upward with revenue and not prices. At least that’s my wishful thinking. A man can hope anyway.
At the end of the day, if you’re someone who enjoys gaming and has the time to fit it into your schedule, there are plenty of reasons to make video games in 2023 a priority. From the enjoyment and relaxation, it provides to the potential cognitive and social benefits, playing more video games can be a rewarding and enriching experience.
