The Age of Coal is over, and the Age of Oil has begun.

11 Bit studios have had major success with some of their most recent titles. From Children of Morta, Moonlighter, to This War of Mine. However, it is their resource survival city-sim, Frostpunk, that has been praised. And late last the developer announced that there will be a Frospunk sequel.

Frostpunk, was a BAFTA-nominated success hitting over three million sales in 3 years. It was nominated for PC game of the year, Strategy game of the year, Strategy/Simulation, and even a Narrative and music nomination. The announcement comes from their official youtube channel with the announcement trailer which can be seen below.

Within the trailer, the announcer talks about some of the horrible deeds that many survivors had to do. Whether it be killing others, turning their back on religion, or worse. The citizens of Frostland have struggled to live in this brutal world.

So when does this take place?

Frostpunk 2 takes place 30 years after the original game. Stating that the age of Coal has come to an end; and that the only way for the remnants of Frostland to survive is now to rely on oil extraction. However, this change will not come easy and will be met with resistance. As the leader of a resource-dependant metropolis, players are tasked with exploration and expansion as the only ways to survive in the frozen apocalyptic hellscape.

What to expect from the sequel?

The team at 11 Bit studios has grown well in the past few years, now sitting at about 70 employees. A quote from Jakub Stokalski, one of the directors on Frostpunk 2 talks about their growth;

โ€œWe have more manpower available to focus on all aspects of the game from the scale, the production value, to the quality of UX. Our ambition is to do more than a straight-up sequel. What we aim to deliver to players is an experience that goes vastly beyond that of the original Frostpunk.โ€

When asked about the scope of the sequel, Jakub Stokalski had the following to say;

โ€œWhat players should expect is a wide universe of choices, freedom to shape the society and the city however they see fit – and reap the consequences. Frostpunk 2 builds on the conflicts of its predecessor – survival vs human values, life vs the arctic frost. But most importantly, it adds a new layer that is present in many aspects of the game – be it politics, be it society, be it technological progress – the conflict between humans and their natureโ€.

When will it come out?

Currently they have not announced a date for the Frostpunk sequel. However for those that are interested in learning more, can follow the official website. As well as they can wishlest Frostpunk 2 on Steam, GOG, & Epic Game Store. Look forward to more news in the future.
